Hexie Ornament and Quilted Placemats

Hi!

Hooray!!!  It’s now July, and that means fun things like “Christmas in July”, and plenty of sewing time while it’s cold outside here for our Winter.  It also means that I’m going to have some exciting Christmassy news for you very soon too…. Christmas in July brings all kinds of surprises! 🙂

Today I have another fun free pattern for you to try – our Hexie Ornament and Quilted Placemats.  Obviously these are great for a Festive Season tree and table, but you can always choose some fun non-festive fabrics and make a table set for now.

Hexie Ornament and Quilted Placemats

Make these easy hexie stars and use them for embellishment on your Holiday placemats, or turn them into Christmas tree ornaments, or you could even string a few together for homemade bunting! These are quick to make and it’s easy to coordinate colours to suit your festive theme.

This placemat measures 16 inches wide x 12 inches high.

To Make One Placemat You Will Need:

**These directions are to make a single placemat, and it is easy to multiply amounts to make as many as you’d like.

½ metre/yard (purple) fabric for star, backing and binding

½ metre/yard (silver) fabric for stars and top

Fat Quarter (blue) fabric for stars and top

Batting measuring at least 18 x 14 inches

Hexies:

You will need to make three of these pieced hexies per placemat.

For each hexie, cut two shapes, using the 2½ inch template provided.

We cut 3 silver, 2 blue and 1 purple.

You can download the template from https://www.onlinequiltmagazine.com/members/content/f/id/1212

With right sides together, sew in pairs with a ¼ inch seam around the sides.

Make sure to leave a small gap to turn the hexie right sides out.

Trim the corners.

…and turn right sides out.

Tuck in the seam allowances at the gap and press.

Use pins to mark the centre point of each side as shown.

To make the hexie star, simply fold in the points between the pins as shown and pin the folds.

Your pinned hexie star.

Carefully topstitch around the star shape in the centre, to stitch down the folds.

Make three hexie stars for your placemat.

Construction:

You will first need to piece the background for your placemat.  From your blue fabric, cut a strip measuring 12½ x 4½ inches.

From the silver fabric, cut a square measuring 12½ x 12½ inches.

Sew the blue strip to the left hand side of the silver square and press seam well.

Lay the backing face down on a flat surface. Smooth the batting on top, and then lay your placemat top on top of that, facing up.  Smooth all layers and pin or thread baste.

Arrange and pin the three hexie stars on the blue strip.

Sew around the outside of each of the hexie shapes through all layers, then quilt the silver square as you like.

We chose a swirly all over design to echo the pattern on our blue fabric.

Finishing:

Cut sufficient 2¼ inch strips to bind your placemat.  Join the 2¼ inch binding strips with 45 degree seams.  Press the ¼ inch seams open, then fold the strip in half, right sides out and press.

Join the binding to the right side of the quilt edge with a quarter inch seam, mitring each corner as you go.  Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back and slip stitch it in place with thread that matches the binding to finish.

Hexie Ornament Option

You can use these pieced hexie stars to make simple decorations for your tree, or gift labels, or you may decide to make several and make your own bunting for across the mantel, or around your tree.

Cut a length of ribbon about 6 inches long and knot the two ends together.

Position the loop so it is over the middle of the hexie shape, with the knot over the edge as shown.

Place the second hexie face down on top, and sew around the edges (leaving a small gap) as you did before.

Trim and turn and press.

Fold in the hexie points and topstitch around the edges to secure and finish.

Enjoy your Christmas in July Placemats and get a head start and make some hexie star ornaments for trimming the tree, festive bunting or even for fabric gift tags.

Enjoy your week!
