Bayside BOM – Part 2

Hi!

We hope you’ve had a great week.  As you can tell – it’s been all “go” here, with our launch today of our Earlybird Sale for this year’s Quilter’s Christmas Advent Calendar.  I know it seems early to be talking all things Christmas, but it will be here before you know it!

Do check it out today if you haven’t yet, as there’s a great discount now, plus our special “12 Days of Christmas in July” extra bonus only for our Earlybirds.

It’s still a while until we get to Christmas, and until then, there’s plenty more quilt-making to be getting on with, like our “Bayside” Block of the Month.  We’re up to Month 2 now, and you’ll have some fun making these faux cathedral window blocks this month.

Bayside BOM – Month 2

To recap –

Bring a splash of beachy sunshine into your home with our classic blue and yellow “Bayside” samper quilt! This queen bed sized quilt is a great stash buster too – make it scrappy, or coordinate your colours and your blocks, or do a bit of both, as we did.

This quilt features some simple big stitch embroidery on a few of the blocks, and a coordinated quilting plan makes this one you can quilt yourself if you want to as well.

Scroll back through our previous posts to find out more info about fabric requirements etc.

This month, you will make the six large Cathedral Window style blocks.

You Will Need:

One blue fabric and one yellow fabric of your choice.

We used –

1½ yards / metres plain mid blue fabric (Note – we bought an extra yard / metre to use for the quilt border as well.)

1½ yards / metres fine print mustardy yellow fabric.

Note – You will use some of this fabric this month, and will use the same fabric again for next month’s small Cathedral Window blocks.

Navy blue perle cotton or embroidery thread for the quilted line decoration.

Cut:

From the blue fabric, cut a total of 12 rectangles, measuring 12½ x 6½ inches.

From the yellow fabric, cut a total of 24 squares, measuring 6½ x 6½ inches.

Piecing:

Each block is made up from two flying geese units.

To make one unit, you will need two yellow background fabric squares and one blue rectangle as pictured.

Fold the blue rectangle in half with wrong sides together, and place on the right side of one square as shown, with bottom and left hand sides aligned, and the fold at the top.

Place the second square on top, face down, and pin all layers along the left hand side.

Sew along that side.

Open out the pieces and fold the blue rectangle so it makes a flying geese triangle unit as pictured.

Press.

Make a second unit in exactly the same way, and arrange the two units as shown.

Sew together across the middle, and you have one faux cathedral window block.

To make the curves, pin back the centre part of these curves the same amount each side before (large stitch ) topstitching with your navy thread, so they are all matching.

We folded back ½ inch on each curve.

Make all six blocks like this.

When you have finished all six blocks, press well and put aside for Month 4 (September) when you will assemble and finish your “Bayside” Block of the Month quilt.

Next Month, you will make some small Cathedral Window blocks.

Have a wonderful week, and don’t forget to check out this year’s Quilter’s Advent Calendar too! 🙂

Enjoy!
