Surviving the Holiday Season: Quilter’s Edition!

December 5, 2024

Hi!

The holiday season is upon us, and if you’re anything like me, your sewing table is probably piling up with projects, last-minute gifts, and endless to-do lists! Between holiday gatherings, gift-wrapping, and the endless flurry of Christmas prep, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—especially if you’re a quilter trying to finish those handmade masterpieces on time. (And this may be why this post is a day late…)

But fear not! I’ve put together a list of my favorite tips and tricks to help you survive (and maybe even thrive!) during the busy holiday season. These are a mix of practical strategies and a few fun reminders to keep things lighthearted when you feel like you’re a bit snowed under with holiday quilting.

Let’s make this season merry, bright, and beautifully quilted!

Quilting Tips for a Busy Holiday Season

Prioritize Your Projects: Make a list of everything you want to complete, then circle the “must-finish” gifts. This way, you won’t end up frantically stitching on Christmas Eve.  (Set yourself a “due by” date too, to keep you on track, and avoid the last minute dramas.)

Create a “Quilting Station”: Set up a dedicated space with all your supplies handy. No more wasting precious time looking for that elusive seam ripper!

Set a Timer: Use a timer to focus on quilting for short bursts, especially if you’re pressed for time. The “15-minute rule” can work wonders for squeezing in a bit of quilting here and there.

Cut Ahead of Time: Batch cut your fabric pieces all at once so you’re ready to sew when you have a free moment. It’s like meal prepping for quilting!

Use Assembly-Line Sewing: If you’re making multiple gifts, work in stages—cut, then piece, then quilt—so you’re not constantly switching gears.

Portable Projects for On-the-Go: Bring small hand-sewing projects along if you’re traveling. Think hexies, small applique pieces, or any hand-quilting work. (I hand sew in front of the TV at nights, and get heaps of time that way.)

Consider “Quick Quilts” or Pre-Cuts: Charm packs, jelly rolls, and layer cakes can save so much cutting time! Look for patterns that work with these pre-cuts for faster finishes. (Go through your old Online Quilt Magazines – we have heaps of quick and pre-cut friendly patterns!)

Set Boundaries: Let family and friends know that certain times are “dedicated quilting hours” so you can focus. Humorously remind them that a happy quilter equals a happy home (or something like that 🙂 )!

Don’t Be a Perfectionist: The best gift is the one that gets finished! Embrace “good enough” stitching if it helps you cross the finish line. (Absolutely!!  If the gift is for a non-quilter especially, they will not even notice the tiny things you may consider imperfections.)

Batch Gift Wrap: Use a simple wrapping style for your quilts and quilted gifts. Quilted tissue bags or reusable wraps are festive but quick to make.

Embrace the Power of Handmade Tags: Don’t forget to add a handmade tag to your quilts. It makes them even more special, and it’s a great last-minute project if you’re “done” but want that final touch! (Scroll back a few posts and read this again – they’re quick, easy and FUN! Quilting Pep Talks: Keep a list of motivational quotes on hand to cheer yourself on. Something like, “Done is better than perfect” or “One stitch at a time.” (Or just find a good podcast or audiobook!)

Reward Yourself: Set small goals and treat yourself after each one—whether it’s a warm cup of tea, a few holiday cookies, or 15 minutes of your favorite holiday movie.

Recruit Help: If family members offer to help, assign simple tasks like pressing seams or helping to wrap finished quilts. (Or they could make dinner and clean the house while you’re making presents on their behalf too???  Just saying…. )

Prepare “Emergency Kits”: Keep a small box with needles, thread, scissors, and pins handy in case of a quick fix on Christmas Eve.

Plan Downtime Quilting: Allow yourself to work on a fun, “just for you” project over the holidays. Even just a block or two can remind you why you love quilting. (Treating yourself is very much allowed!)

Be Kind to Your Back and Wrists: With so much sewing, remember to stretch, take breaks, and use ergonomic tools so you don’t end up too sore to celebrate! (No one wants tennis elbow for Christmas!)

Have Fun with the Process: When all else fails, put on some Christmas music, wear your coziest socks, and remember that every stitch is part of the joy of the season!

And on that note,

Enjoy the Season, and Enjoy your Holiday quilting!
