Make Your Own Mistletoe Sprig for Christmas
December 11, 2024
Hi!
Today we have a tutorial and pattern for you to make your own Mistletoe Sprig to hang in your house this Christmas. I made this easy felt sprig last year, as where we live, there is mistletoe, but it’s usually very high up in the gum trees, and there’s no way I was climbing just to get some to hang in our house.
At least this way, I can use it year after year too…
Make Your Own Mistletoe Sprig
What do you do when you can’t find mistletoe to decorate with? Make it of course!! This fun wired sprig of mistletoe is quick and easy to make, and will last for years!
You Will Need:
Green felt
16-20 pieces of green florist’s wire (or a thin flexible wire substitute)
Short strip of white pom pom braid
Fine felt tip pen
To Make:
Download and print the template from https://www.onlinequiltmagazine.com/members/content/f/id/1283 and cut out the mistletoe design.
The easiest way I have found to trace it onto your felt is with a fine felt tipped pen. Use a different method of your choice if you prefer.
The traced design.
Use sharp scissors and cut out on the lines.
We traced and cut four of these shapes from our felt. Do as many as you like to make your sprig look realistic.
One cut out shape.
We used this florist’s wire to give our felt some body. We used three lengths per felt shape, plus a few for the berries and hanging loop.
Start at the bottom of one branch and poke the wire through, going up and down up the length of one branch, leaving the rest of the wire length at the top.
You don’t need to wire every leaf – they will look better if they are allowed to hang.
Fold the end over on itself to keep it secure in the felt, and so it doesn’t poke you.
There are three branches on our mistletoe design. Run a wire up each branch, from one leaf and up the stem.
When the side branches meet the main one, continue with the wire up that branch, so all ends are up the top of the main stem.
When you have the three wires in place, twist the ends together to secure.
We used pom pom braid for our berries.
Use another length of wire to thread 5 or so pom pom berries onto the end.
Fold over the wire end to secure.
Twist your ‘berries’ around the wire so they make a cluster.
Arrange on your sprig and twist the wire around the main stem to keep them in place.
We put berries on three of our four pieces.
You can bend the branches then to make them all different, and a bit more realistic.
Arrange your springs together and use the top ends of the berry wires to twist around the top to hold them firmly together.
Add another length of wire and twist it around the top, leaving a loop to hang your mistletoe sprig from.
And finished – as easy as that, you just made your own mistletoe! Bend to shape the leaves as you like, and find the perfect spot to hang your sprig from, to make the most of those Christmas kisses!
I hope you enjoyed this ‘make your own mistletoe’ tutorial, and that you can find a suitable place to hang your spring from in your home this festive season.
Enjoy!
