“Hidden Hearts” – Free Block of the Month Quilt-Along – Month 4
August 13, 2025
Hi!
I hope you’ve had a great week, and that you’re ready for the next block in our “Hidden Hearts” Block of the Month quilt along.
This is a fun project and will give you some great practice getting perfect points, and building your piecing skills. Remember, our finished quilt looks like this –

To recap:
There are 8 different pieced blocks, and we’ll put them all together in Month 9, which means that you’ll be able to finish your “Hidden Hearts” quilt in January. It’s a Queen sized medallion style quilt, and it’s guaranteed to give you plenty of easy piecing practice.
I’ll post a new pattern here around the second week of every month, so make sure you pop your first name and email address in the boxes to the left hand side of this post, to make sure you hear when each new block has been released.
As always, change the colours to suit yourself, and do send this to other quilting friends to join in with us too – the more the merrier!
So let’s get started!
“Hidden Hearts” – Month 4
This month, you will continue with 32 pieced Birds in the Air Blocks.

You Will Need:
This month, you will need your darker orange and cream fabrics.
Cut:
From your cream fabric, cut 48 squares measuring 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches.
Also from your cream fabric, cut 16 squares measuring 6 7/8 x 6 7/8 inches and cross cut diagonally once, so you have a total of 32 triangles.
From your darker orange fabric, cut 48 squares measuring 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches.
Also from your darker orange fabric, cut another 48 squares and cross cut them diagonally once, so you have a total of 96 small triangles.
Piecing:

Pair up your sets of 48, 2 3/8 inch squares – one darker orange with a cream square.
Use a pencil and rule a diagonal line on the wrong side of a square, as shown.

With right sides together, and the edges aligned, sew a ¼ inch EITHER side of that marked line.
(You can chain piece these to make it quicker.)
Cut on the line.

Open out and press. You now have two half square triangles.

Lay out your block pieces, referring to the picture.

Join the squares and triangles together in rows and press seams in opposite directions between rows.

Join your rows together to form the pieced triangle half and press blocks well.

Sew your two triangle halves together and press.
Put your 32 new blocks aside for Month 9.
Next Month, you will continue with some Spool blocks for your quilt.
There’s still plenty of time to join in with us too! Just scroll back through our previous posts and you’ll find the first three parts of this block of the month pattern. Come and quilt along with us!
