“Hidden Hearts” – Free Block of the Month Quilt-Along – Month 8

Hi!
I know we’ve only just reached December, but as this time of year gets busy, I thought I’d share the final of our “Hidden Hearts” block of the month blocks this week, to give you plenty of time to get them all made before the end of this year. In January, I’ll share the final month, where you assemble your quilt (and make the bonus project).
To recap –
There are 8 different pieced blocks, and we’ll put them all together in Month 9, which means that you’ll be able to finish your “Hidden Hearts” quilt in January. It’s a Queen sized medallion style quilt, and it’s guaranteed to give you plenty of easy piecing practice.

I’ll post a new pattern here around the second week of every month, so make sure you pop your first name and email address in the boxes to the left hand side of this post, to make sure you hear when each new block has been released.
As always, change the colours to suit yourself, and do send this to other quilting friends to join in with us too – the more the merrier! 
So let’s get started!
“Hidden Hearts” – Month 8
This month you’ll finish your piecing with 28 Contrary Wife (?!) blocks.
You Will Need:
This month, you will need your bright yellow, light green, cream and darker green fabrics.
Cut:
From your light green fabric, cut 56 squares measuring 2½ x 2½ inches.
From your bright yellow fabric, cut 84 squares measuring 2½ x 2½ inches.
From your cream fabric, cut 56 squares measuring 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches.
From your darker green fabric, cut 56 squares measuring 2 7/8 x 2 7/8 inches.
Piecing:
Pair up your 2 7/8 inch squares – one cream with a darker green square.
Use a pencil and rule a diagonal line on the wrong side of a square, as shown.
With right sides together, and the edges aligned, sew a ¼ inch EITHER side of that marked line.
(You can chain piece these to make it quicker.)
Cut on the line.
Open out and press. You now have two half square triangles, from each square set.
Lay out your block pieces, making sure your half square triangle units are arranged correctly.
Join the squares together in rows and press seams in opposite directions between rows.
Join your rows together and press blocks well.
Put your 28 new blocks aside for next month.
Next Month, you will put your blocks together and assemble your quilt.

Hi, I started making this quilt in Nov and hopped around making quilt block rows, but as I looked at the quilt photo and row 5, the spool block, and I couldn’t come up with 36 blocks. I hope it just the the way the quilt is held up, so I am hoping for the final release and seeing how all the rows fit together. I like the colorful photos and am anxious to get it sewed together. Thanks for the colorful quilt and how you made the rows work together.

Hi Kathy! There’s 9 Spool blocks end to end across each corner of the quilt. Some are cut almost in half at the edges. Don’t worry through – there’s a bonus pattern at the end to help you use those leftover pieces of blocks up. Can’t wait to see your finished quilt!! Thanks, Jody

I almost can’t believe that with your monthly square instructions that I have put together something so beautiful.
