Be Mine Valentine (and How to Draw Perfect Hearts)

Today’s post has two parts – with Valentine’s Day only a few days away, I wanted to firstly share a super easy way for how to draw perfect hearts that you can use as templates for all sorts of projects. The other reason for today’s post is a quick and cute free pattern that you can whip up in plenty of time before Valentine’s Day too.
So let’s not waste any sewing time – it’s time to jump in and give these a go! (And once you’ve seen just how easy it is to draw your own perfect hearts, there’ll be no stopping you! 🙂 )
“Be Mine” Valentine
Make your own fabric Valentine’s messages this year, and customise them to suit. We used some striking red Liberty print fabric for ours. Mix and match fabrics, scraps and ribbons to make a bunch for your loved ones.
This Valentine measures approx. 5¼ inches wide x 6½ inches high.
You Will Need:
Small amount of feature fabric for front and back
Small amount of plain white fabric for the message panel
10-12 inch length of thin ribbon
Small amount of batting
Small amount of fusible webbing for applique
Small amount of fusible interfacing/stabiliser
Pen for writing your message on fabric
Assembly:
Although templates are included for this valentine, it is easy to draw your own, and we’ll run through how to draw perfect hearts first, so you can customise your hearts as you like.
Fold a sheet of paper in half. You will draw your heart to the folded edge, so you only have to draw half, cut it out and open it up for a perfectly symmetrical heart.
Use things to hand for templates – cotton spools, eggcups, mugs, and saucers and plates for larger hearts.
We used a large cotton spool. Trace around the shape, so it is slightly off the edge as pictured.
Now simply use a ruler to join the curve of the circle to the folded edge in a straight line.
The angle of your line determines the shape of your heart.
The top one is fatter and rounder, and the bottom one with a longer straight line will be a more ‘classic’ heart shape.
We wanted a more naïve and rustic look for ours, which meant drawing a more elongated heart.
Draw your circle a bit out from the folded edge of the paper as pictured.
Rule straight lines to join both top and bottom of the curve to the folded edge.
Cut out the shapes with the paper still folded, then open out and admire your hearts! Ta Dah!! Now you too know how to draw perfect hearts!
These hearts are shown in the order we drew them.
We used first and last for our valentine.
To make your valentine, start by tracing the smaller heart shape onto the paper back of your fusible webbing.
Iron it to the wrong side of your white fabric.
Cut out your heart shape. This will be the message panel.
Use the large heart shape and trace and fuse the stabiliser to the wrong side of one piece of your feature fabric, and cut out the large heart.
Position the white heart on the front, and fuse in place with your iron. Optional – We also topstitched around the raw edge in matching white thread.
Position your length of ribbon as shown, so that the ends overlap the top of the heart.
Sew in place with a scant seam on each end.
Layer your batting on a flat surface, with the feature fabric for the back panel right sides up on top.
Place your heart front right sides down, and pin the layers together. Make sure the ribbon is tucked into the middle and is away from all edges.
This is the back, but from the front side, sew around your heart shape to join all layers together.
Leave a gap as shown on one of the straight edges, to turn your valentine right sides out.
Cut out your valentine fairly closely to the seam. Trim the excess off the point, and cut a little nick carefully into the point between the curves of the heart at the top. This will just ensure it turns nicely.
Turn your valentine right sides out. Tuck in the seam allowances at the gap and pin and topstitch around the shape to close and neaten it.
Write your message in a fabric pen, and be ready to hand your valentine out!
